Performing Identification and Discrimination Experiments for Vowels and Voiced Plosives by Using a Neurocomputational Model of Speech Production and Perception
نویسندگان
چکیده
A neurocomputational model of speech production and speech perception is introduced. After training, i.e. after mimicking early phases of speech acquisition, the model is capable of producing and perceiving vowels and CV-syllables (C = voiced plosives). Different instances of the model were trained for representing different “virtual subjects” which are then used as listeners in identification and discrimination experiments. First results indicate that a typical feature of speech perception – i.e. categorical perception – occurs in a straight forward way from our neurocomputational productionperception model.

Towards a neurocomputational model of speech production and perception
The limitation in performance of current speech synthesis and speech recognition systems may result from the fact that these systems are not designed with respect to the human neural processes of speech production and perception. A neurocomputational model of speech production and perception is introduced which is organized with respect to human neural processes of speech production and percept...
متن کاملPerception and production of English cues to plosive voicing by native Mandarin speakers
Perception and production of English cues to plosive voicing by native Mandarin speakers" (2013). Undergraduate Honors Theses. Paper 429. Abstract The acquisition of non-native sounds is a prominent feature of second language acquisition. Mandarin does not permit the voiced plosives /b d g/ or plosives in the syllable coda position, both features of many English words. This disparity presents a...
متن کاملA neurofunctional model of speech production including aspects of auditory and audio-visual speech perception
A computer-implemented neurofunctional model of speech production is introduced, which is capable of articulating vowels, VC-, and CV-syllables (C = voiced plosives; V = vowels). It will be shown in this paper that this production model is capable of simulating basic effects of auditory and audio-visual speech perception like (i) categorical perception of consonants and vowels and (ii) the McGu...
متن کاملOn the perception of voicing in syllable-initial plosives in noise.
Previous studies [Lisker, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 57, 1547-1551 (1975); Summerfield and Haggard, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 62, 435-448 (1977)] have shown that voice onset time (VOT) and the onset frequency of the first formant are important perceptual cues of voicing in syllable-initial plosives. Most prior work, however, has focused on speech perception in quiet environments. The present study seeks to ...
متن کاملKyungsang Korean Subjects' Perception of Japanese Pitch-accent
The purpose of the present study is to examine whether native speakers of Kyungsang Korean are sensitive to pitch variation in vowels after Japanese voiced and voiceless plosives, given the tonogenesis account that the tone difference -H and L in vowels after aspirated and fortis consonants and after lenis ones, respectivelyis lexically specified word-initially in Korean [6]. In order to invest...
